How long can a person go without sleep?

I had read that a person goes crazy or just black out after 2 days of no sleep, but the story of this woman who went 10 days before asking for help has made me question this. Is this woman an exception? How long can a person actually go without sleep? What are the consequences of long term sleep deprivation?
