My CSA box provider just threw a tantrum and tried to “get back at” their customers for complaining about produce quality and communication

I have been using my CSA provider for almost two years. They have been great until this year. About halfway through this year, CSA owners have clearly not been concerned with the quality of food that was being provided. This has been a growing issue for about two months, and for the past month, communication has really gone down the drain too.

The setup this year, since umbra was so screwed up, they made it that you submit a survey (basically a “request” so they can pick for you, and then drop them off at a drop site). You have 13 veggies to choose from, a list of fruit, “all produce”, a “dairy” option, a “baked goods” option (which is always bread, sometimes muffins). And then you can select up to two “no’s” (veggies to avoid).

I have been getting a ton of produce I don’t like, and have put them in the “no” section for a while, and still get them, so I addressed this issue with the owner. She basically blamed COVID and said “you get two no’s, umbra has no no’s. You have it better than CSA customers, so either you put CSA down, or you put umbra down. Either way, you put the CSA down, either way, you put umbra down.

I tried to express to her that her responses were becoming hostile, less communicative, and overall, I wasn’t thrilled with the quality of food I was getting. I asked to cancel my subscription. She basically blamed everyone who had complained about produce quality and customer service, and literally said it was “your fault” that I was being screwed over, that she was tired of people being rude, and that I would have to get another week of produce. She didn’t ask what I wanted. It was a “you will get this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this”. I asked her to please confirm. She did. I called her out again on the food quality, which I didn’t even get.

This is the food I got:

3 small yellow bell peppers
3 large red bell peppers
1 bag of baby carrots
2 bunches of beets
3 large turnips
3 large Kohlrabi
4 large potatoes
2 large eggplant
1 large butternut squash
1 large spaghetti squash
1 big jar of pickles
1 big jar of salsa
1 big bag of apples
1 big bag of pears
1 bag of a mix of cherry tomatoes/grapes
Butter and cream
A loaf of white bread
A loaf of cinnamon bread
A few muffins
And then a bag of “pastries”

Now, my issue is that I didn’t ask for tge majority of this. She told me the produce had been picked, so I knew I was going to get screwed with some of the produce, but two things caught my attention. The cinnamon bread. And the pastries.

I opened the cinnamon bread first, and as soon as I did, I noticed a sour smell. The bread was warm and damp, and damp to the touch as well.

The pastries were the “wtf?” Moment. There was a mix of muffins, cookies, croissants, cupcakes, and other assorted baked goods. The cupcakes were moldy. The cookies were stale. The muffins were stale. The croissants were moldy as well.

There was no note, no apology, nothing. Just me opening my bread and wondering why it smelled like an ashtray.
