What were the early 2000s like politically?

I was 9 at the turn of the millennium and 12 on 9/11. From my 12 year old perspective everything political just changed overnight and I find myself wondering what it was like in the 1990s and early 2000s before 9/11. What were the political issues, figures, and topics on people’s minds at the time?
