I went out to lunch with my coworker and he started talking about how he’s been having difficulty finding a partner. He’s 37 and has a sister who is 35 who unfortunately is mentally handicapped.

He told me that with his family’s traditional culture, where the oldest sibling (his sister) is supposed to get married first, and his sister being mentally handicapped, he is reluctant to find himself a partner lest he be judged by his family.

I told him that I think he should find himself a partner and not care what others think. He agreed.

And then I asked him, if he ever gets married, who will take care of his sister then? He told me that he expects his future wife to accept the sister as her own as well.

Some Chambers threads I read were telling him to take care of his sister forever and not expect his future wife to be his sister’s caretaker. I told him the same thing.

He argued that since he would be the primary bread winner, his future wife should also be expected to take care of his sister alongside with their kids.

The food was great but the conversation sucked.
