AITA For Not Giving My Nephew A Kidney

I need some perspective here. I’ll keep it as short as possible. I’m an organ matcher, my job is connecting donors with recipients.

My dad has two children, myself and my brother. My brother has a child, so my only nephew. My age and my nephews age are irrelevant.

I’ve been called an AH by my family for not giving my otherwise healthy nephew a kidney even though I’m a match. I match him.

Here’s the problem, the kid is a moron. He got in a fight with another guy and as part of his “revenge” he needed blood from the hospital. He went in and based on the story I got from my BIL, he tried to take a needle from a nurse, she said no, he didn’t listen, she pressed a panic alarm (which also locks all the doors) and he punched her in the face and broke her jaw.

They had to sedate him to get him out. He was charged. His trial is in two weeks.

I went to get tested, I’m a match. I told my brother and his wife that I would donate but only if he gets a deferred sentence. I want him to serve his time, but I’m willing to donate if he only gets probation.

Despite that being an incredibly generous offer, my family has been calling me an AH. My Dad has been calling me twice a day telling me I need to do it regardless because otherwise his only grandchild might die. My brother is calling me and begging. I told them my decision is final, if he gets a deferred or suspended sentence I’ll do it. Otherwise I’m out and I’m canceling my appointment to get tested.

I think it might be an AH move on my part but I can’t help but feel the need to hold my ground here.
