A story about my life

I stopped counting my birthdays a long time ago. I've got a few different IDs but I'm over 25. You could say I'm pretty lucky to have been born like I was. I'm one of the select few who don't age anymore. The catch is that we can't procreate and even the smallest cut or scratch will bleed for several hours until it heals.

It was 1974 when they first discovered it. Some crazy high jacking in Florida is what kicked it off. The flight got hijacked and the hijackers were eventually shot. One of them lived long enough to say "please don't hurt me! I don't want to go to heaven! It's nothing but eternal torment!" The police got confused as the hijacker had already been shot in the leg and chest several times. During the interrogation the hijacker explained that he had been shot once before and lived.

He said he was shot in the head by a burglar in 1960. It killed him but somehow a few hours later he was alive and healed. He was in so much pain that he could never get over it. He also said he stopped aging years ago. The police called in a specialist and after a while they were able to confirm that the hijacker was who he claimed he was. He was arrested and never seen again.

Several others showed up over the next few years. By 1976 it was well known that people who came back from the dead could not die again. Over the next few years several people who came back were arrested and charged with crimes. Murders, child molesters, and even some terrorists.

The government was in a bit of a pickle. They couldn't execute these people but they still needed to be punished. In 1980 the US signed the Forever Act. This was a worldwide agreement that if someone "came back" they were given a choice. Life in prison or indefinitely being wandering a frozen, pitch black cave. The frozen, pitch black caves were developed over several years and were completed in 2002 with 162.

Back when I was a kid, in the 90s, people who came back were all over the news. They'd average about 6-8 a year and they'd always be really interesting stories. There was a woman that came back after falling down a flight of stairs. Another guy came back after being impaled through the chest.

The second time I died was scary. The first time I died I was two. My family lived in an apartment above a store. I slipped out one day and fell four stories onto the sidewalk. I remember waking up in the hospital with a severe headache. It subsided after several hours and I was able to walk home with constant supervision.

I didn't realize it was strange until I was a few years older.

The second time was when I was 8. I was at the park and fell off a swing set. I landed on a metal bar and it impaled me. I remember the pain and the feeling of every breath I took pinching against the bar inside me. I remember my parents crying and screaming as I called out in pain. As I got weaker and weaker the pain subsided and I went to sleep. When I woke up again it was several years later and I was in a hospital. I was frantically looking around and trying to figure out what had happened. I remember crying when they told me what year it was.

When I was a kid, it was scary that I might be taken away.

So I hid it. My second death happened when I was 8. When I came back I was 16. I stayed in the hospital for a few months before I finally left and found a family to live with. They took me in and raised me as their own. I stayed with them until I got a job and moved out.

I've had two more deaths since then. A skiing accident at 38 and a car wreck at 75. Once I woke up and was considered a danger to myself and others and was put in a mental institution. The other time I woke up in the previously mentioned cave.

I hate the cave. I didn't know what was going on at first but when I realized that I was alone I started screaming. I screamed for days, pounding on the walls and begging for help. No one ever came. I had to kill myself with a nearby rock. Several years later I woke up and spent several more months in solitude before I killed myself again.

I've killed myself about 10 times. I don't know exactly how long I was down there but I'd guess hundreds of years.

The first time I killed myself was when I fell off a cliff. I broke my legs and arms. I had no food or water and couldn't even crawl. I laid there for days, starving and bleeding, until I died.

That's when they found me. I was down there for what felt like thousands of years.

They found me in 3056, exactly 1029 years after I was put in the cave. I was taken in by a few kind people and they taught me how to live. I went through extensive training and I got a few implants to help me catch up.

Today I'm an agent of the FCA. That's Forever Crimes Agency. It's an international agency that seeks out criminals who have come back. The Forever Act had been repealed several hundred years ago and the government had decided to go in a different direction.

The problem was that hundreds of thousands of people had come back since the act was passed. With the cave system already overwhelmed they had to turn to a new solution. They developed technology that could monitor people's brain activity. In 2049 they were able to develop an algorithm that predicted how violent a person was going to be.

People that came back were given a test. If they scored over a 50 they were considered a threat to society and were arrested and placed in a cave. If they scored under a 50 they were allowed to live freely.

It didn't always work, and people who came back that were violent could slip through the system. That's where the FCA comes in. We track down and capture people who come back and slip through the system.

It's a hard job but I excel at it. It's my job and you gotta do what you gotta do, right?
