Why do people think the 5 day 40 hour work week is the gold standard?

The 5 day 40 hour work week was created because it was better than the 7 day 80 hour work-week. They’re making enough money, they’re still healthy enough to reproduce, and they have just enough free time to buy things. It doesn’t sound like a ‘gold standard’ to me.
