A few months ago I saw this article about China implementing "boy lockdowns" to force boys to study harder. This came from lockdowns of lockdowns of schoolchildren to stop cheating on the gaokao.

This CBC article discusses problems China is having with boy grades. Here is an excerpt from the article:

---

Four years ago, my province, Jiangsu, took the bold step of launching a new experiment to boost our students’ performance.

We called it a “boy lockdown”. We would lock high school boys in school for 8am to 10pm from Monday to Friday, only allowing them to go home at weekends. In that time, they were forbidden from playing video games, watching TV or even talking to their friends. All they could do was focus on their studies.

The experiment was the brainchild of our education minister, who was concerned that boys in our province were underachieving in their exams compared to our girls. In 2018, for example, the male students’ pass rate in the Chinese college entrance examination was 83 per cent – five percentage points lower than the female students’ pass rate.

Our experiment was rolled out across more than 1,000 lockdown high schools, with one major difference: boys would be allowed to go home on Fridays at 6pm if they passed a test, but if they failed they would be locked in until 10pm on Saturday.

It was a huge success. The lockdown schools achieved higher grades than the non-lockdown schools by a significant margin. In 2019 the boys in our province achieved an average score of 609, higher than the national average and higher than the girls.

---

Lol.
