My mom has a cooking/hr rate for cooking that has changed the way I think about food, what’s yours?

So I’ve definitely been cooking a lot more, and I recently asked my mom to help me figure out the most efficient way to do so, because she’s a very excellent cook and I wanted to know her secrets. She’s a freelance architect so she’s taught me how to think about time in a way that was really new for me.

She was like, “well, you need to think about your hour rate and to consider how much you’re making per hour by cooking more. This only makes sense if you’re making twice what your hour rate is in terms of food production.” She’s got a 100/hr rate so she’s always trying to figure out how to make twice that per hour.

This is a big change for me because I used to cook whatever made me happy without thinking about it, and that was fun and relaxing for me.

Now I’m mostly making a few staple things that are super cheap and efficient because it doesn’t make sense for me time wise to make more elaborate foods. It’s a little sad, but it also makes cooking easier to fit in and feel less time consuming.

Does anyone else do this/hr calculation? What’s your comforting efficient dish, and how do you get yourself to cook?

Also, if you know of any cook books on this topic I’d love some recs!

Tl;dr: what’s your hr rate for cooking, and what are your go to efficient dishes?
