What's the deal with the whole skincare routine trend?

I see it pretty much everywhere - "my morning skincare routine" "my night time skincare routine" and then there's a 15 minute video of people showing you all the products they put on their face. I've also been asked by a friend if I have a skincare routine. I just wash my face with soap and that's it. I don't get why I need to use a ton of products on my face.<br><br>I don't really care about looking like a supermodel, but i'm worried it's just a bunch of products I don't really need and that I'm just being lazy or something.
