A good rule of thumb for buying items secondhand is to never buy something that you don't have a plan for. Also, don't buy something as an investment, with the ultimate plan of selling it to make money later. You will never have to sell any items that you acquire at garage sales or thrift stores. You can give these items away as gifts, donate them to charity, or let friends or family have such items for free. You will never have to sell items at a garage sale. If you buy something secondhand, you can consider yourself the last person to own it.
