What if the justice system treated everyone the same no matter the crime?

Let's assume they treated all crimes the same, independent of severity. You steal a pack of gum, sentenced to death. You graduate with honors from a university, sentenced to death. You look at a cop the wrong way, sentenced to death. You sexually assault a child, sentenced to death. You cure cancer, sentenced to death. You call 911 for a life threatening emergency, sentenced to death. You walk into a bank with a bomb strapped to you and rob everyone, sentenced to death.

How would you react to this system? How would you think it makes sense? What would the US look like with a system like this?

I think it would be chaos. Everyone would be walking on pins and needles every time they interacted with anyone. The justice system would be swamped with cases. Most people would completely ignore the laws. I think it would take the justice system straight to an authoritarian standing. I'm glad they have laws for lesser crimes. I'm glad we don't sentenced everyone to death. The justice system is flawed but this system would be much worse.
