I just had my second suicide threat of the week.

I teach 3rd grade and today I had a kid break down crying. I went over to see if I could help him, and he said he was going to kill himself. I said “Oh no, why would you want to do that?” And he said, “because I’m stupid.” <br><br>I don’t know what to do when kids say this. I’ve had another student say something similar this week and I just don’t know how to help them. I said all the right things. Told him he’s not stupid, that we can get him tutoring, a therapist, etc. But man, this shit breaks my heart. I had to literally pull him on my lap and just hold him while he cried like I was his mother or something. Poor little dude. This is the second time this has happened this week. I don’t know what to do. I’ve never had kids this young say shit like this before. <br><br>I feel like hugging him just helped him in the moment but not going to help him beyond our hour. I don’t know what else to do.
