Removing manufacturer logos from firearm stock, what's the process?

I'd like a plain stock on my 10/22. I've been reading that acetone is about the only thing to do it. I've read some folks apply it directly to the logo and scrub it off while others apply it with heat and pressure. I'm sure using heat would cause the logo to peel off faster, but I want to know if the chemical will penetrate into the wood a bit further if directly applied to the logo without heat. The heat would just apply pressure into the wood while the solvent works faster without heat.

I'd like a clean and plain stock and I don't want a sticky mess in the wood grain. I don't want to just paint or polyurethane it as I want a clean and plain stock.
