I cleaned out my fridge and freezer today, and the instant sense of clarity I feel is crazy.

For background, I’ve been doing a bit of a “minimalism journey” specifically for myself. My husband is in support of it, but it really isn’t for him. That’s fine. But I’ve done my closet, my dresser, my bathroom, my office... the one place I really hadn’t thought much about yet is the kitchen. First, it’s my husband’s domain, and he’s a bit of a foodie, so I didn’t want to mess with his stuff. Second, I’ve been super busy. But when I really started thinking about it, it wasn’t so much the food that I wanted to mess with, it’s the wonder if some of the food has gone bad... and that’s where the anxiety comes in for me.

So I tackled it. All of it. And the clarity that I feel is crazy. The fridge has a bunch of condiments that my husband hasn’t touched in months, but he’s adamant that they are still good. I set it aside and said that I’m putting it up in the cabinet, and he’s free to use it any time he wants. I tossed anything that was past it’s expiration, or smelled funny, or was clearly bad. I set aside what was still good, but I wasn’t sure if I would use it before it went bad, and set it aside.

Anyway, I set it all aside and went to the freezer. I have to say, I have never messed with the freezer specifically before. It’s not really my domain, but I was surprised at how much frozen wonder bread there was. I know that it’s not good to keep food for a long time in the freezer, but I was somewhat surprised at just how frozen, and how much, there was. Bread from at least 6 months ago. Frozen wonder bread that my husband had bought, and which I’m pretty sure he had forgotten about. It was getting to the point where it’s going to go bad. I tossed it.

Anyway, I tossed a bunch of frozen stuff that was wonder bread, and instant pot food, and leftovers from the holidays, and I’ll tell you what, once I got rid of it all, I felt a huge sense of clarity. I feel like I can breathe. I feel like I can eat at the kitchen table again. I feel like I can be in the kitchen and actually enjoy cooking.

I know this sounds pretty silly, but I just wanted to let you all know that minimalism really can be a help. If you have a bunch of boxes, get rid of them. If you have wonder bread, toss it. The instant sense of clarity that I feel is amazing.
