Someone had left a briefcase of money on the seat across from me.

I’d been on that train for God knows how long. I’d left after work, got on the platform, and stepped on. I’d once looked at the route map and puzzled over it. There were four lines, and four platforms, yet somehow the train I was on right now had neither come nor gone.<br><br>Things like that were the price of progress, as the company would usually tell us. On the plus side, this train did have everything a person needed. Food, a place to sleep. Even a small fountain! There were a few other people here too, but we never really bothered to talk to one another. There was the woman and her two girls. One of them looked just a few months old. There was this man too, who was always pacing, and two others who were asleep. They’d been on here for just as long as the rest of us.<br><br>None of us really knew what to make of each other. <br><br>I usually kept to myself on the train, just minding my own business. I had a little book of riddles! There were hundreds of them, and each one was so damn clever. <br><br>I puzzled over the second to last one. <br><br>Why couldn’t this man see his feet? There was an answer on the back, but I liked to try my own! <br><br>*I am a city man. I haven’t left the city all my life, and I don’t want to! There’s everything! Food, work, family, friends. Why would I ever leave? There’s just one more thing I need!*<br><br>*I am a man of the sea. I know it all! From the Amazon, to Polynesia! But there’s one more thing I need!*<br><br>*I’m the king of the jungle. I know it all, I know everything! I am such a clever man! But there’s just one more thing I need!*<br><br>Why couldn’t this man see his feet? <br><br>I read the back. And this puzzled me too. <br><br>Why, yes! One man couldn’t see his feet, because he was a city man with no legs. The other man couldn’t see his feet because he was a man of the sea who had no legs. And the last man couldn’t see his feet because he was a king of the jungle and had no legs!
