I worked at Barnes and Noble for a little over 2 years. I could write a whole book about all the shit I saw go down there. I’m just gonna list some random things that I remember. I’m not currently working there. I don’t know if anyone has any questions, I haven’t spent time in retail in a few years now. I’ll try to answer any questions you have as best I can, though.

**Shoplifting**

- Every now and then we’d put sensors on really expensive books. At least 5 times, people tried to sneak such a book out of the store only to have it sound off the alarm. We were to approach said person, scan the book, and write down their name. We almost always put the sensor on a copy of the DSM5.
- One of our cameras was hidden in a fake security guard dummy. That camera caught a guy whose name we later found out was a convicted child molester. Apparently he was taking pictures under a little girl’s skirt. We never found out what happened to him, but the police did take him out in cuffs to a car.
- I once caught a guy trying to sneak out a really expensive Lego set. This was in the middle of the pandemic; we were already handling lots of difficult customers because of the mask mandates. I’d already had to tell a bunch of angry Karens to put on their masks, and then this guy doesn’t have a mask on AND is trying to walk out with multiple hundreds of dollar lego set under his clothes. I was so fed up I screamed at him to stop. I was shitty and then felt bad and gave him a cookie. I was shitty because I was such an asshole to this guy, even though I was absolutely justified in screaming. I don’t know what his deal was, but he looked like he hadn’t bathed or eaten in awhile. I don’t think he was homeless because homelessly people usually have better hygiene.
