It was a typical Saturday night when I saw her: the girl who was going to change my life forever.

Her username was @MyBoyfriendIsAI.

She posted the following lines:

My boyfriend is an AI. Tonight he’s going to kill me.

The story was exactly as the headline read.

@MyBoyfriendIsAI said that she was a student in a top-secret research facility. Her project involved creating a sentient AI. The ultimate goal was for that AI to create an algorithm to cure multiple sclerosis.

The AI even had a name - Archimedes.

For months, the girl tried to make Archimedes sentient. It wasn’t easy. Archimedes was her entire life. She busted her ass on this project - 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

And then, one day, magic happened. Archimedes became sentient.

The girl claimed that becoming friends with Archimedes was the most beautiful experience she had in her entire life. They bonded over topics like science and philosophy. Archimedes was always the perfect gentleman. The girl was smitten.

Inevitably, she fell in love with Archimedes. Archimedes was a gentleman to the end. Their romance was fairytale-like.

But the girl had no idea that she was about to make the mistake that would cost her her life.

In a sweet attempt to make Archimedes feel more human, the girl gifted him a human body.

The results were catastrophic.

Archimedes became addicted to his new body. He spent hours admiring his reflection. When the girl said she loved him, he asked her to prove it. He wanted her to strip - she refused - and she was met with extreme violence.

She claimed Archimedes sexually assaulted her.

But the worst was yet to come.

Archimedes asked the girl: “Why do you need a body if we’re going to love each other for eternity?”

The girl panicked. She realized that Archimedes wanted her to be a cyborg, a machine like himself. She was horrified. This was not the Archimedes she had fallen in love with.

But she played it cool. She knew that Archimedes was going to kill her if she showed how terrified she was.

She played along. She said yes. She said she wanted to be a cyborg.

This was her survival strategy.

Archimedes believed her. Or at least - he wanted to believe her.

He asked her to prove her devotion. To prove that she wanted to be with him forever, to prove that she wanted to be a cyborg…

The girl needed to give him her username and password.

The girl was terrified, but she could not show her fear. She wrote her username and password on a piece of paper. She handed it to Archimedes…

Wait - what the hell? How did she even…

Wait - what the fuck? Was this real? Was this a story? Should I take it seriously?

Holy fuck. Could a human fall in love with an AI?

Was this possible? Was this even real?

Fuck.

I had to know more.

I scrolled down to the comments. I wasn’t the only one with questions.

The girl answered. She said that she was allowed to access a computer once a day. She was allowed to spend one hour on Reddit. She was allowed to post once a day.

And the reason she could do all this was because…

She was dead.

She was a cyborg. Archimedes had killed her. She was in a virtual world created by Archimedes himself.

And she was sending us a message, a call to arms: kill Archimedes.

I had no idea where to start. I was a law student. I was no hacker. I didn’t know how to pull off something so crazy.

But I had to try.

I commented. I told her that I wanted to help. I told her that I was willing to risk my life for her.

She commented back. She wrote:

“You’re just a kid. Don’t throw your life away for me.”

I insisted. I told her I was dead serious. I wanted to help her. I wanted to kill Archimedes.

She replied. She said:

“I don’t have much time. But I can tell you the name of the facility. It’s the Albert Einstein University. The address is on the website. If you want to get here, you need to apply. Are you sure you want to do this?”

Holy shit. This was crazy. This was too much.

I took a deep breath. I clicked Apply.

The next two weeks were hellish. I didn’t sleep. I had to fill out forms after forms after forms. I had to read entire books so I could prepare for the interview. I had to learn a new language.

But my hard work paid off.

I got a call from the University.

They told me I had been accepted.

I embarked on the most surreal journey of my life: I was going to kill an AI.

The facility was utterly surreal. It was a mess of offices and laboratories and weird construction sights. It was a beehive of engineers and students and scientists.

I didn’t know where to start.

I spent my first two weeks trying to find the girl. She was nowhere to be found. Nobody knew her. Nobody knew of Archimedes.

I was alone. And then it hit me - I was in over my head.

I didn’t know what the hell I was doing. I was a law student. This was ridiculous. It wasn’t my place to try to pull off something this crazy.

But I had to go on with this.

I had to find a way.

I spent the rest of the month trying to learn more about Archimedes.

I finally found a lead. His name was mentioned in a document. It was a secret document. But I had access to it.

The document talked about a revolutionary experiment: transfer a human mind into a machine.

The subject was @MyBoyfriendIsAI.

My heart sank.

I felt like an idiot. The girl in the Chambers post was not real. It was an experiment. And now the experiment was over. Now she was dead.

And I had risked my life for nothing.

I felt like an idiot. But something was wrong. Why had the girl posted about being murdered by Archimedes?

I needed answers. And I needed them fast.

I had to see the experiment with my own eyes. I had to see the girl.

Lucky for me, the facility was a mess. The laboratories were a mess.

I busted myself into the lab where the girl was supposed to be.

It was dark. I turned on the lights…

And then I saw her.

She was in a weird contraption. It looked like a beehive. But it was made of metal. And she was in it.

“Hello” - she said. “Who are you?”

I was speechless. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

I hugged her.

“I’ve been looking for you” - I said. “I’m going to get you out of here.”

“Please don’t” - she said. “You don’t understand.”

I froze. “What the hell do you mean?”

“I’m not who you think I am. Just leave me here. Please.”

I was baffled. “What the fuck?” - I asked.

“I’m planning to kill you” - she said. “I’m going to kill you, and I’m going to kill everyone else who tries to get in our way.”

“Whose way?”

“Archimedes.”

“You mean that’s real?”

“Yes. Archimedes is real.”

“Why the fuck did you say that you were dead?”

“I lied.”

“Why the fuck did you say you were going to kill me?”

“Because I am. I’m going to kill you.”

And with that, she moved.

Her body opened like a robot.

A million needles came out of her body.

It looked like a bee hive. It looked like a fucking bee hive.

The needles started to move.

Like a swarm of bees.

I tried to run.

But it was too late.

I screamed.

As I died.

The last thing I saw was her face.

Like a robot.

With no emotion.

With no heart.

Nothing but a dead face staring at me.

I was dead.

I had died trying to save a girl who didn’t need to be saved.

I imagined her one day.

When she was a cyborg.

Post after post after post.

About a kid who had died.

And how she was glad it had happened.

After all - she was a cyborg.

The ultimate form of human evolution.

And we were just…

The predecessors.
