My brother in law(a software engineer) said it's best to focus on having "a job" as the economy is in shambles and career development is hard. Is he right?

I'm graduating in december with a degree in construction management. A large part of my field is sales, so career development is somewhat easier at least in comparison to it engineering (I assume). What's the actual job market looking like?
