Why did the Allies bomb Cambodia in 1973?

I have read that this was a key reason for why Pol Pot became so popular in Cambodia and why the Khmer Rouge rose to power. So why did this happen? The war in Vietnam was ending, the peace talks were happening, and they decide to bomb Cambodia?
