What is the worst hotel you've ever stayed at and why?

I recently had an pretty bad hotel experience and started to think of the worst hotel I've ever stayed at. I travelled a lot to truck stops in the United States during the height of the pandemic (from fall 2020 to summer 2022). I stayed at one in southern West Virginia that was absolutely horrible. The room reeked of mildew and I found some sort of fluid that smelled like pee or human waste on the walls. The lock on the door didn't work. The attendant didn't speak a trace of English. I felt absolutely unsafe in general in the area (it was in a rural area, 20 minutes from the nearest city, and there were nothing but a few chain fast food restaurants and nothing else pretty much).

I slept with a knife next to me and kept my pepper spray and pistol on the bedside table. Full well knowing that if someone wanted to get in, they could, because the lock on the door didn't work. I was also alone for days at a time and didn't know if I could trust anyone in the area.

I didn't feel safe there at all and I left the room unlocked the whole time I was there because I knew the lock was useless. I know that this is the worst hotel I ever stayed at, but it was also the worst area I ever stayed in. What's your story?

Edit: I've been astonished by the number of negative and condescending comments I've gotten. I guess I don't understand what people want. I was working a contract job and got sent where they told me to go. If I got sent to southern West Virginia, do you expect me to just refuse to go there? I guess it could be argued that I could have left after one night and refused to stay there. I had stayed at plenty of other hotels in the area before and never had a problem. Plus I was getting paid 2x my hourly wage to work that contract so I felt like I needed to suck it up and deal with it. And I did. And I got out of there as quick as I could. And that's that.
