*They* were watching me

I'm a 25 year old female, and back in 2019, I was a 21-year-old, living in my new apartment by myself. It was in a pretty good neighborhood and neighborhood-watchy kind of place. People were outside a lot, some playing with their kids, some walking their dogs, etc. I had been there for a few months, so I didn't see anything weird during that time.

It was around 3 am when I woke up to the sound of my sliding glass door opening. I of course freaked out and pulled the covers over me and pretended I wasn't home. I started shaking violently.

Instead of calling the police, I thought to text my neighbor to check if my front door was unlocked. I hear footsteps coming from my hallway, and they were heavy. Whoever it was, wasn't trying to be quiet. My phone was dead, so in a quick motion, I jumped out of bed and went to my dresser where I keep my portable charger. Opening it, I see my phone is dead, but I saw something even weirder. The plug next to my lamp was plugged into the wall, but that was for my alarm clock. It shouldn't have been plugged in, so I pulled it. Then I unplugged my lamp. The lamp turned off, and it was dark.

The footsteps got closer and closer, and I started to feel a presence nearby. The footsteps stopped right outside my bedroom, but whoever it was, was quiet. After a minute or two, I started to shake again. It was cold that night, so I thought "Well, I'm just cold. I'll plug my lamp back in, and plug my phone in to charge, then call the police!" I plug the lamp back in, but it doesn't turn on. I think "Okay. So now I'm freezing and blind. Let me just go check the circuit breaker. I'll just walk past the intruder and go check the breaker. They won't even notice me..." It was a stupid thing to think, but I did it.

I slowly walked out of my bedroom, and I didn't see anyone. So I walked to the kitchen, where the breaker box was located, and flipped the breaker. The lamp turned on, and I felt a "Thank God!" feeling. So I went to my room, plugged my phone in, and was about to call the police when I hear a voice behind me.

"Don't call the cops. We aren't going to hurt you. But you need to get out of here. Right now. Because *they* are watching you. Take your phone, your wallet, and your car keys. And go. Don't look back. And don't think we haven't been watching you. Because we've been watching you since you moved in. We know you aren't a bad person. You keep to yourself, you don't bother anyone, you don't even hang out with the neighbors. And we like that. But the people who are outside right now? *They* don't like you. And *they* want you gone. So please. Just go. Because we would feel terrible if anything were to happen to you. You seem like a nice girl, and we don't want you to die. Okay? So just... just go. And don't come back."

I of course listened, and grabbed my phone, wallet, and keys and ran out the front door. It was around 5 am. And when I reached my car, I turned around to see who was behind me. But the door was closed. And when I looked up at my apartment, I saw the lights turn off.

I got in my car and drove to my friend's house. She answered the door, and I told her what happened. She let me stay the night, and I NEVER went back to that apartment. I NEVER went back to that neighborhood. They were watching me. And I don't want to find out who "they" are.
