What is the philosophy, if any, behind the attitude that turn-based games are somehow inherently better than real-time games?

I see this attitude a lot from my friends, other people online, review sites, and even from game critics. It seems to be especially common for them to lament when a turn-based game goes real-time or when a real-time game doesn't have some turn-based mode. I don't really understand this, because every game is different and has different design goals, and whether a game should be turn-based or real-time should be completely dependent on the design goals of the game. I also don't really understand the criticism that real-time games are too luck-based, because I think you can easily have games that eliminate randomness altogether through design, and I don't think a little bit of randomness, if its not too much, can really break a game. It may appear that way because a lot of real-time games are also roguelikes, but I think its the roguelike aspect that's the problem there, not the real-time aspect.
