In this story I was the stalker. It was the early 80’s. I was 14. I had a brother who drove me insane. I was fed up with him. I decided to run away. I had no idea where I was going- but I knew it was away from my brother. I packed a small bag, and set out. No one noticed. No one loved me. I did not know what I was doing, how long it was going to take, or how long I would be wandering. There was no cell phone. Just me. I walked a street. Then another. I just wandering. I was fed up. Then I heard a voice. It was a car near me. It followed me. I did not know what to do. After a few minutes I got annoyed. I flipped the car over. But it was not a car full of abductors- it was a station wagon full of a family. They were yelling at me. The father was looking at me with- well, pissed off eyes. I saw the woman, who was the mother. She looked at me- she looked like she was pissed off. But I saw a daughter, a girl who was a few years younger than me. She had a dirty face, and she was eating a chicken nugget. There was also a brother. He was older than me, and younger than my brother. He was driving. He looked panicked. I did not know how long they had been following me for, but the father said they had been following me for 25-30 minutes. They asked me if I needed help. I said I was fine. They tried- they really tried. It was want, disease, wandering. I had no idea where I was going. I want a brother who was not the most annoying person in the- universe.

I just wandered. I had nothing.

Because the daughter was hungry, the father pulled over. They tried- they tried to get me to eat. I want hungry. I wanted nothing. I was wandering, a 14 year- old girl, wondering the streets, with no want, no need, no direction. I wanted nothing, needed nothing. I just wandered.

I just kept wondering, and the car followed me. Finally- I saw it. A bridge. A bridge that was one way to a island. There was a river, a wonderful, deep river. I saw it, and I knew what I had to do.

I ran to- well, the water. I ran as fast as I could- but the brother caught me- just at the edge of the water. He grabbed me. He said, “you cannot check out. Please don’t do this.” I fought him. I yelled at him. I- I called him a cunt. It was a horrible thing to call someone. Horrible. And it was the first time I called someone the c-word. It is the greatest insult. I called him the word. I- I was fed up. There was- there was nothing left.

The brother got a weird face- it was not bad. It was a look. Then he grabbed me. He said, “If you want check out- I will check out. And now you will never know if you will check out. You will never know. You will have something to- live for.”

Then he grabbed me. He carried me back to the car.
