I'm a long time cartoon watcher from the US, and I'm getting a bit bored of the same stuff. I've noticed a lot of the cartoons out now tend to follow the same style and the same humor/drama formula, if that makes sense. I've noticed that a lot of cartoons the past 5 or so years tend to be very formulaic in terms of their story archs, character development, art style, target demographics, and the type of humor they use, even if they vary in plot. This isn't a bad thing, but personally I'm not a fan of formulaic art.

I recently saw a few clips of anime on my recomendations, and I really liked the story archs and the characters in it. I'm looking to get into it, but I don't know where to start. Does anyone here have any recommendations for an American that wants to get into anime, but doesn't know much about it?
