Why I don't believe in getting a degree

I’ve been freelance developing for 8 years, I’ve never had less than 3 job offers in my inbox at any given time and my income has consistently been 3x-5x that of my peers.

I don’t believe in education, I believe in earning and learning.

The reason I feel this way is that I went to college for two years, I racked up an insane amount of debt, I learned next to nothing and I had to start from scratch and build a portfolio from nothing. Meanwhile, I could’ve put the money I spent on that useless degree towards building the skills I needed to succeed. I could’ve started my career at 18 instead of fucking around with useless shit till I was 20.

The skills I needed to succeed were things like Webflow, design patterns, front end and back end, full stack development but I was stuck in a classroom learning complete useless shit.

I’m not saying this is everyone’s experience, but I’m living proof that you don’t need a degree to make a good career for yourself. I make 70k a year, I’ve been doing this since I was 18 and I’m 26 now, I’ve sold my services for 1000s of dollars to huge companies, I’ve built websites that get millions of views, I’ve built mobile apps, I’ve built blockchain networks, I’ve worked with Netflix, I’ve worked with Hulu, I’ve worked with Snapchat.

I don’t believe in education, I believe in earning and learning and I think that’s something everyone should consider if they’re in school right now.

Your skills are your career, not the paper you get at the end of college.

Your skills are what make you money.

Your skills are what make you valuable.

Your skills are everything.
