I found a disturbing-looking VHS tape in my attic. What am I supposed to do with this thing?

I live in the city, in an old multi-story house that dates back to the late 1800's. It's a big place, even if you take out the fact that I share it with four roommates. We all moved in together here about six months ago. Clearly, we're not the first inhabitants of this place, as you'll probably guess if you've read the title of this post.

A few weeks ago, one of my roommates, Lauren, was up in the attic doing something or other. I'm not sure what she was doing up there, but she looks for reasons to go up there a lot. I think she’s doing a PhD on Civil War History or something. Anyway, one day she comes down and hands me a tape. I was in the middle of studying for exams and barely looked up.

"What's this?"

"A VHS tape I found up in the attic."

I looked at it, still half distracted by my work. It was an old VHS tape. Black plastic, and the label on the front was a piece of paper taped on with a couple words scribbled on it in marker.

The label read, simply:

"Do NOT Watch."

"Where did you find it?" I asked, more curious now. I set my notes aside.

"I found it up in one of the boxes," she said. "I was looking at some of the photographs up there. Did you know—"

"Did I have to watch it?" I finished, grinning.

"No," she said. "I just found it."

That was it. I took the tape and set it on top of one of my bookshelves, and forgot about it until a few minutes ago, when I was looking at it again.

I don't have a VHS player, I have to point out. I also don't know of anyone else who still has a VHS player. That may have been what initially prevented me from popping it in and watching it six weeks ago. But I was also pretty busy at the time.

I'm not so busy now, but I still don't have a VHS player. Maybe I can find one somewhere. I was thinking I could check out some second hand stores, or maybe go out to one of the pawn shops in town. They probably have them. I wonder if they still work, though.

Do VHS players break down after a while, or are they good for as long as you have them?
