Why do so many people still say "Military grade" and "High powered"?

I feel like those phrases have been effectively debunked a long time ago.

I hear people say "Why do we need high-powered weapons?" all the time, and they remind me of a group of people I had a conversation with about ARs and military ammo, and someone said "Military grade is far more powerful than what you buy at Walmart." - I told her that Walmart military surplus sells the *exact* same ammo that our troops use. They looked at each other in confusion.

I also had a conversation about "Why do people need high powered guns?" and another lady said "You don't need that for self-defense." - I asked her what she thought "high-powered" meant and she said "A bullet that is stronger and more powerful than others." - I told her that the term "high-powered" was coined in the 19th century to describe cartridges that were more powerful than black powder cartridges. She also looked at me in confusion.

I feel like the media still uses "high-powered" and "military grade" as an emotionally charged phrase to try to make guns seem more intimidating and scary.
