making $100k/year hinges on "knowing how to manage your salary"

I was talking to a finance professional who made a pretty casual comment that raises a lot of questions for me.
He said, "making $100k/year is easy, but you have to know how to manage your salary."

I'm 28, making $60k in a specialized field with a software company in the north east US. I feel privileged and comfortable enough, but I'd like to break $100k before 35. I'm a bit skeptical of the "knowing how to manage your salary" thing. Am I completely off base here? How common is this? Should I just be making 100k already? How many software professionals out there are actually making this much, and what hinges on "knowing how to manage your salary" if you're doing the work for it?
