Picking your belief

The other day I started talking to my buddy about religion, and he made a comment that I just can't get out of my head.

He basically said you pick and choose what you believe, and then you pick a religion that matches closest to those beliefs.

Is this true? Should we be allowed to pick and choose what we believe or is there such a thing as a right religion and wrong religion?

To me this makes sense, but then one thing that really made me think about it was that my buddy didn't pick a religion that matched his beliefs closest. He just became atheist. This is confusing to me. Shouldn't he believe in something, is there just such a thing as no religion is correct?

I feel like I'm just rambling on now and not making sense.
