I am Chinese American. My boyfriend is Korean American. We both speak our dialects at home with our parents.

When we met, he couldn’t speak a word of Chinese and I couldn’t speak a word of Korean.

For the first few months of our relationship he would ask me to teach him Chinese words/phrases. With the basics out of the way (ni hao) he asked me to teach him how to say ‘I love you’. That was around our three month mark.

Our relationship quickly became serious, and we moved in together after about six months. My Chinese was barely used except to speak to his family.

A year into our relationship, he still didn’t know how to say ‘I love you’ in Chinese. Every time he asked me to repeat the phrase, I would refuse. My argument is that he didn’t bother practicing or remembering it even though he had ample opportunities to do so.

I admit, I was being petty. I tried explaining to him that it’s frustrating that I teach him something and he doesn’t bother practicing it. He said it’s not fair that I won’t teach him Chinese anymore.
