The last few months have been the hardest few months of my life. My partner cheated on me, I lost my job and I’m running low on savings. My brothers girlfriend is a realtor so she helped me find a new flat. It’s small and compact but it’s all I can afford. The only issue is that the last tenant took their own life. It’s not something I’ve ever experienced before so I’m not sure how I should handle it.

The agent was acting strange when she showed me around the place. When she left I found a note addressed to me on the kitchen table.

Dear Tenants,

I’m so sorry that you’re here. When I moved in at the start of the year the previous tenant left me a note. If only I had listened to it.

This is my last hope that we can escape the horror we’ve created.

Best
James

When I read the note further there was a letter inside dated 1/01/2023.

Dear occupier,

I’m so sorry that you’re here. I can’t lie to you, I’ve made a mistake.

At the age of 26 I won the lottery. That was 5 years ago and I’ve spent my life since then investing my winnings. I was fooling myself into thinking I was making savvy investments but in reality I was being reckless. The only smart thing I’ve done with the money is purchase this flat so that when my money runs out I have a place to live.

I was conned into investing in a start up tech business with a friend. They promised me a return of five times my investment but after several months of excuses I’m starting to think it was a scam.

I’ve spent my entire fortune on stupid things and now my money is running out. I’ve had to sell my car, my shares and nearly everything of any value. I’ve never been good with money but this is the pinnacle.

I’m using my last bit of money to pay my rent until the end of the year. The direct debit will be cancelled at the end of January so please ensure you set up payments with the landlord.

I’m not sure what my future holds, I could find a job and stay but I fear that I’m done. I’m considering ending it all. This note is my last hope that I can escape what I’ve created.

If you’re reading this it means I’ve failed. I’ve left a few things for you to survive your first few months. I’m sorry but it’s not much.

Please stay safe
Dale

Underneath the note was a bunch of keys. I couldn’t figure out what they were for until I realised that the previous occupier has glued a small key pad under the kitchen counter. Inside was £300 in cash and £20 in chips and dips that’s still good.

Later in the evening I decided to investigate the keys. I couldn’t listen to the TV anymore and the deafening silence of the empty house was becoming too much. I decided to see what they unlocked.

The largest key unlocked the cellar door and the smallest unlocked a metal flower pot in the back garden. Inside the flower pot was another note addressed to me.

Dear the next occupier,

I’m so sorry. The money I left you is gone after only two months. I’ve been applying for jobs and splitting my time between the library and a local bookies. My time in the bookies is starting to catch up on me.

I’ve done everything I can to make this place secure but I’m starting to experience things. I’m not a person who ghosts or the paranormal believed but the things I’m experiencing cannot be explained.

I’ve started by leaving glue traps in the cellar. The rodents down there have begun to sound like walking.

I’m sorry and I can’t lie to you. I’ve thought about ending it. The reality of my situation is setting in. I’m 31 with no qualifications, no work experience and a house full of possessions. I’m considering giving everything up and ending it all.

Please stay safe
Dale

I was spooked by the note. I’ve never been one for ghost stories or anything paranormal. I’m not a disbeliever but I just find it too scary to contemplate.

I decided to go to bed and forget about my worries. The flat was so quiet but after a few hours of sleep I began to listen out for the things that Dale mentioned. There’s a few creaks and groans but nothing that suggests he’s telling the truth.

After a few hours of tossing and turning I dozed off. The sound of movement down stairs woke me up. I slowly go downstairs in a zombie like state, foreign to my surroundings. That’s when I saw it. A rat scuttling across the kitchen floor.

“Fuck!”. I shout and run back up the stairs. When I compose myself I decide to head back down. I find one of the glue traps and place it where I saw the rat. I’m not a monster, I just need to know if it’s the truth.

Two days later.

I’m sitting on the couch with a bottle of gin when I hear a noise that sounds like someone walking around upstairs. The sound is followed by the thud of something being dropped. I stop breathing, I can’t take my eyes away from the stairs. I slowly walk towards the stairs. As I get towards the top I can see my bedroom door is wide open. I know for a fact that I closed it.

“Hello!”. I shout. There is no answer. That’s when I see my bathroom door is also open. I slowly walk towards my bedroom. That’s when I see it. A small piece of paper on my bed addressed to me.

Dear occupier,

I can’t lie to you. The last occupier didn’t kill themselves, I did what I had to do.

I’m sorry.

Dale
