Netflix has just released its new show "Wednesday" which is for all intents and purposes a regular teen high school show, with the exception that it features the Addam's family. The show features Wednesday Addam's as the main character, with her being a typical teen aged girl, being sent to another high school because she is rebellious.

The show is filled to the brim with the typical high school characters, with the bully, the cheerleader, the nerd, etc... But one thing stood out to me in particular in the show, how it portrays female hypergamy and how it seems to promote it. The show has a character named Tyler, who has been Wednesday's friend since childhood.

The show goes out of its way to portray him as just a friend, who has never really shown any romantic interest in her, even if she was the one who helped him get over his fear of drowning because he saw her almost drown and "rescued" her, granting him confidence.

Now enter the new love interest who is a handsome boy with a mysterious past. It is obvious from the first moment that he and Wednesday start talking that they are interested in each other. But the show doesn't portray that, it portrays them as if they are just friends who are hanging out. Up until the moment when Wednesday is jealous because he is talking to some other girl.

Because of this, Wednesday then subconsciously decides to get closer to him. This is even more apparent when she wears make up for the first time and a dress in front of him, something that she has never done for any other boy in her life. Up until this point in the show, Wednesday has been portrayed as a typical emo girl who wears only black and doesn't give a fuck about her appearance.

Now enter the moment when she kisses him out of jealousy, and the moment when he and her are about to have sex, after which she suddenly gets cold feet. Wednesday has been portrayed by the show as a character who doesn't have any fear, or any emotions except for anger. But the moment when she was about to lose her virginity made her scared. Suddenly it seemed as if she had developed emotions, developed a soul.

She then goes on to say that she wasn't ready, but was willing to do "other things" with him, because he has already done "other things" with her. This scene just goes to show how the show is portraying female hypergamy and promoting it. Suddenly it seemed as if they had switched roles. Wednesday went from the person who initiated everything to the innocent girl who was just for some reason doing "other things" with him, when in reality it was her the whole time who initiated them.

This is just anotherNetflix show, with their usual "strong female character" and their promotion of female hypergamy.
