I'm a left leaning centrist, my parents are very right leaning. Lately in conversations with them they keep saying things like, "Oh the left HATE this," "Oh the left HATE that". I'm actually a left leaning person and I don't feel like I hate the things they say I do.

On the internet, I see people saying Conservatives HATE this, Conservatives HATE that. I have talked to multiple Conservatives and they don't feel like they hate these things.

To me, hate is an incredibly powerful emotion, I would say it's one of the most powerful. When you hate something or someone, you irrationally don't even like that it exists. I hate polyester clothing. I hate it to the point that I won't purchase clothes that are made of it, and I will actively try to get rid of or destroy it when possible. The emotion of hate is so strong that it makes you do things you normally wouldn't do because you dislike a thing so much.

So I'm confused when Conservatives or Liberals say that "the left" or "the right" HATE something almost constantly, and I don't see this emotion of hate anywhere. Where is this hate coming from? Do people in general use the word hate wrong?

What does hate mean to Conservatives? What does hate mean to Liberals? What does it mean to you?
