CMV: "America" (as a word) should be banned from polite conversation

Hello,

As a Canadian, I often say "My vacation in the US was really beautiful" or "Thank God I don't pay American prices for healthcare". Or a Mexican could say "Thank God I don't pay American prices for avocado's" (yes, that would be a fair statement).

I feel that in the US, there is a lot of confusion between "America" and "USA". In other countries, we are familiar with saying "the US" in polite conversation, whereas many of my American friends will say "America". This would be the same as if Canada were to start calling us "the continent" (which would be incorrect because Mexico and the US are part of the same continent).

What do you think ? Is it right to "steal" the name America as some people (including some well-educated Americans) say ? Can you change my view about the wrongness of this ?

EDIT: To clarify: I believe that every american has the right to call their country whatever they want to call it. But as a Canadian, I have a hard time calling it "America" because I see it as a geographical inaccuracy. Just like if someone were to call Canada "the continent", I would feel that this is terribly inaccurate.
