I finally finished my MA thesis, and I think it's suitable for publication. This is my first ever query letter so I would appreciate any feedback. I also haven't written a synopsis yet so I'll probably post that here later. Thanks in advance for the feedback!

Southeast Asian folklore meets the Toyota War in this Vietnamese epic fantasy novel of greed, politics, and war.

My full name is Nguyen Le Cam Thanh, but everyone calls me Cam. I am a twenty-five-year-old of Vietnamese origin, currently living in Europe. I've recently finished my MA degree in Creative Writing in Finnish and I'm currently working as a freelance writer, translator and editor. I am also a dancer, choreographer and instructor. I am the owner and administrator of Vietnamese Metal Media.

Beneath the White Tree is my first novel ever. I've never written anything longer than a short story before and my fiction writing is heavily influenced by folk metal and black metal. I've spent years researching Vietnamese and Cham folklore for this novel, as well as the history of Vietnam and the legends of its dragons. My biggest influences are the children's books by J.R.R. Tolkien, Lloyd Alexander and Michael Scott. My writing style is vivid, poetic, versatile and detailed, with clever word choices that bring images to readers' minds. However, I am still a beginner and I learn something new every day. I would be more than happy to work with a professional writer or editor as long as they respect my vision and the heritage this story is based on.

**Query letter**

[Your Name]
[Your Address]
[City, State, Zip]
[Your Email Address]
[Your Phone Number]
[Your Website or Social Media]
[Query Date]

[Agent's Name]
[Agent's Agency]
[Agency's Address]
[City, State, Zip

Dear [Agent's Name],

I am reaching out to inquire whether [Your Agency Name] would be willing to represent my fantasy novel “Beneath the White Tree.” I am confident that your passion for fantasy and your experience in representing fantasy novels would be an excellent match for my work.

Southeast Asian folklore meets the Toyota War in this Vietnamese epic fantasy novel of greed, politics, and war.

My full name is Nguyen Le Cam Thanh, but everyone calls me Cam. Though I grew up reading fantasy, I was always introduced to the same themes and the same old tropes that were often repeated ad nauseam by the most common fantasy authors. I know that I am not alone in my craving for something new and different. I want to bring something unique and unseen to the fantasy genre, drawing from the fascinating folklore of Southeast Asia. As a Vietnamese writer, I feel that I am in a position to write stories that no one else has written or can write. I want my stories to be authentic, respectful and to show the diversity and richness of the cultures whose folklores I’m using, and to show them to a Western audience.

Beneath the White Tree is my first novel ever. While the dragons seek to unite the whole of Indochina under one rule for the greater good, the snake people seek to protect their freedom and their right to exist. In times where no one knows what is right and what is wrong, three individuals from different sides must form an unlikely alliance to survive the horrors of the war that threatens to destroy the whole of the ancient world. As the very balance of nature is at stake, the three warriors can only hope to discover the truth behind the never-ending conflict and to end the bloodshed before the world burns.

Against the backdrop of a world inspired by ancient Asia, where dragons, demons, gods, spirits and legendary creatures roam free, humans, half-humans and monsters must navigate the gray areas between good and evil, duty and morality, friendship and loyalty, greed and selflessness. They must choose whether to obey or resist, to love or hate, to save or destroy.

The themes of the novel include greed, politics, colonialism, war, identity, prejudice, privilege, loyalty, honor, friendship, love and self-discovery. It contains scenes of violence, abuse, slavery and animal cruelty. It is fairly orthodox high fantasy with a slow burn pace, with over 160 characters, multiple storylines, plot twists and cliffhangers. The book is full of action, battles, magical duels, romance and drama. The world-building is heavily influenced by real-world history and Vietnamese and Cham folklore.

Beneath the White Tree is an adult epic fantasy novel of 464,000 words. It is the first book in The Lost Empire trilogy. The second book is currently a work in progress. I have included a brief synopsis and the first three chapters of the book for your review. I would be more than happy to supply the whole manuscript if you're interested.

As a Vietnamese writer, I am a member ofSoutheast Asian Diaspora Writers and Writers of Saigon. I am also a member of Writing A Fantasy Novel, Dark Fantasy and Horror Writers, LGBT Fantasy, R/Fantasy’s Own – The Writers’ Room, A Biography and Life, Chat with a Fellow Writer, Am I a Writer Yet?, Humans of Writing and Critique Partner Hunt. I am also a critique partner for T. E. Atkinson in exchange for an opportunity to read and critique her novel, a queer retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

I am currently open to querying Beneath the White Tree to every agent I can find who is interested in fantasy. I am seeking an agent who respects the story's Vietnamese origins and LGBT aspects. My dream is to see the book in print and translated into my two native languages. I would also be happy to see it adapted into an animated movie or a TV show. I believe that, together, we can achieve my dream while bringing new and unseen stories to the fantasy genre and a new writer to a wider audience.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Please feel free to ask for more information or to request my full manuscript. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
Nguyen Le Cam Thanh

Cam White Tree
