My student got clothes and shoes from my school after I discovered that he had outgrown everything I had seen him wear (he was wearing his dad's hand me down jacket). Then he went home with one of the math teachers because she said she had some clothes for him to sort through. She gave me a handwritten Christmas list from him the next day. He put a Christmas tree with ornaments as his first wish. He lives with his grandpa who works at a local grocery store. He has been with his grandpa since he was a toddler. I'm a single mom of 3 working full time with lots of medical bills so I can't afford to throw money around. I bought a prelit tree and four sets of ornaments in four colors. I asked if he liked multicolor, gold, red, or purple and he said he liked them all. I bought a star tree topper and some holly sprigs to decorate the house. My kids and I were able to get it all for under $70. I gave him the bag with the tree and everything in it yesterday and he just looked at me with tears in his eyes. I asked him to open his bag so he could see everything I got him. When he saw everything he just started crying. I asked him if he was okay and he wailed and said that he had never had a Christmas tree before.

I don't know how we're going to afford to keep doing this, but I am going to try my hardest to make sure this kid doesn't feel like this ever again. It's for the kids, right?
