Google has announced that it will be dropping support for physical security keys in the near future as part of the company’s efforts to move towards more secure account security verification methods. Google will be phasing out its security key kits that ship with cards that are paired to random IDs.

The firm said that the 2SV (two-step verification) kits that were used to send a physical card in the mail to the users that contained a security key for account verification would no longer be available.

However, those who have already received the 2SV kit will still be able to use them to log in to their Google accounts. The drop in support for physical security keys comes as Google is pushing for more advanced verification methods. That includes the company’s 2-Step Verification Advanced Protection Program (2SV APP).

In the next few months, Google will be removing its physical security keys for 2SV ahead of the launch of the new 2SV APP kit that uses NFC cards to help establish secure verification. The Kit includes a phone-sized NFC card that can be tapped on a phone. However, it’s worth mentioning that Google’s 2-Step Verification Advanced Protection Program (2SV APP) only works on Android devices.
