It's 2025 and we're seeing a major shift towards AI-authored works

Firstly, I just want to say that I am a proponent of AI - I don't think we should shut it down or ban it, but I think we need to have a discussion about the role it is going to play in our lives.

It's 2025 and I've seen it in gaming. I've seen it in music. I've seen it in art. And now I've seen it in writing - both here and on other platforms like Wattpad and Tablo.

AI is not yet to the point of being able to replicate the average person's tastes and sensibilities, but from what I've seen in the writing world, AI can produce intermediate level stories that are good enough for most casual readers.

In my opinion, this isn't a bad thing - the increased availability of content should only ever be a good thing. However, I think there is a problem that needs to be addressed.

On platforms like Wattpad and Tablo, where there are fewer gatekeepers and more works are accepted all the time, AI generated works are being pushed forward as being written by human authors.

Some of you might have seen the recent backlash on Wattpad about AI generated works. The community went up in arms and called for a full ban on AI generated works. The site administrators responded by saying that all works are reviewed by a team before being published in a "curated" list, and insisted that they had a way of detecting AI generated works.

The simple fact of the matter is that there is no way to reliably detect AI generated text at the moment, and this problem is only going to grow more prevalent.

I think we need a new way of categorising works on these platforms in the same way we do with ghostwriters.

Yes, human authors are still necessary - AI can't come up with it's own ideas, and nor can it replicate the subtlety of human emotions and responses. But AI can write works that explore intermediate ideas in an intermediate way, intermediate enough that people will keep reading, and it only stands to reason that the quality of AI generated works will only continue to improve.

If we are to support the current explosion in AI generated works, we need a way to acknowledge which works are written by a human, and which are partially or entirely generated by AI.

Until we're able to solve this problem, we run the risk of humans being left behind.
