Why is the 6.5 Grendel such a niche caliber?

It’s a wildly more capable round than the 5.56, and nearly twice as cheap as the .308, and it’s also widely available. I’ve heard mixed information about the cost of buying a barrel, and the cost of conversion. I can’t imagine it’s *that* expensive if you can get ammo so cheap.

I’ve also heard some_CUSTOM guns are available, but I’m not aware of anything in the commercial production realm. I’d love to see some commercial guns available. I’ve always seen it from the angle that since the 6.5 is so cheap, you can get a custom. I’d love to see the best of both worlds.

I also love the thought of running 2 calibers, 6.5 and 300 AAC, because I think the combination of the two rounds would be really nice; being able to go between 6.5 for accuracy, and 300 for hunting/taking down targets, seems like an extremely good thing in my officers. I’d love to explore this more.

Overall, it just makes sense to me, but I understand there are probably a few things I’m missing as I’m not much of a gun person.
