French girl here, I’m appalled by the behavior of some “American tourists”

First post here so excuse if some of the things I say are wrong. I’ve been living in Paris for a few years now, and I recently had lunch at a pretty common brasserie, not high end but still nice that’s pretty well known and loved by tourists and french people.

I’ve had a few experiences with American tourists that were mildly annoying but the one I had today was appalling. Keep in mind that I’m not talking about ALL American tourists, just the ones who act like they’re at home.

Today, I’ve had three groups of Americans that were just so infuriatingly rude. The first one ordered but complained about the food that we don’t serve at lunch, when they’ve asked for it, stating “well, we asked for our food 30mn ago”. We’re not fast food people, it takes time to eat at a brasserie, you’re not here to eat and rush outside, that’s just not how it works. Then they ordered their food which I just started bringing out, and complained that they ordered their food “to go”. We didn’t even say it was ready, I literally just brought out the appetizers and they took it out of my hands and put it in their take away bags that they brought with them. Told them it was 50€ and they gave me 20$, asking how much it was in USD, then paid with their credit card and didn’t leave any tip.

Then the next group came in, and I showed them their table. They asked me to switch the plates and silverware that were on the table and take them away because they looked “too used”. I told them that the other plates were exactly the same as the ones on their table but they started yelling at me and saying that “we don’t want to eat on your shitty plates”. The other customers started looking and I told them that I’m gonna call my manager. They said “oh, call your manager! We don’t care, we’re gonna post about this on social media and make sure you lose your job”. I’m pretty sure they were high on something because they were laughing manically and making fun of the decor, saying that “the fake wood on the floors are so cheap looking!”. The manager came and gave them new plates but they started complaining about the food, saying that we serve raclette that “is straight out of a supermarket packet” (raclette is a wheel of cheese that you melt and serve, it’s not made from scratch, it comes in a packet, you just melt it) so they asked for a refund and left, shouting at us.

Lastly, we had a group of Americans that came in and were talking SUPER loudly, and they were HIGHLY intoxicated. They were shouting and making a scene, the other customers were looking and trying to ignore them but they were asking for a doggy bag for a dish they haven’t ordered yet, and started complaining that we “don’t serve good burgers”. We. Don’t. Serve. Burgers.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I feel like most of the issues that me and my colleagues have is with Americans. A lot of them ask for recipes and get mad when we tell them that it’s “not our job to give you our recipes”. Some will ask us to make the food less spicy, which is insane because the food isn’t spicy in the first place (like, we’re French, we eat one mildly spicy dish in the entire year, which is curry, and we complain about how spicy it is even though it’s not)

Also, can someone tell me why Americans tip? I’m a waitress but I’m also paid a normal salary like any other job, I don’t depend on tips. Tips are generally 10% because it’s just to show appreciation for good service, but most Americans will leave 50-70% of the bill as a tip. Like, thank you but I don’t need that much money, it’s just my job. I don’t do it for tips, it’s just part of the job.

EDIT: THANK YOU GUYS FOR THE AWARDS! I didn’t expect this post to get so much attention, it’s my first post and I didn’t know if anyone would even see it! Thank you all for your kind comments and for making me feel better. I didn’t want to bash Americans because my experience with them has been mostly positive and I’ve been extremely welcomed by them when I visited the US! So thank you all for making me feel better :)
