How the hell is the unemployment rate so low in the face of a recession? It seems completely counter-intuitive to every explanation I've heard of recessions.

It seems like all the major recessions of the past century had really high unemployment rates, but now the US is in a recession and the unemployment rate is somehow lower than it was during our prosperous economy just a year ago. How does that possibly make sense?
