The way some of you speak to your students is appalling.

Before I get the annual "it's just a post on Chambers" responses, I'd like to say that this is my 8th year teaching and 6th year in my current school. I've been in education for 14 years in total. I've been in over 1000 classrooms during that time. This is not normal.

I've never seen teachers speak the way some of you do. There have been multiple times over the past few years where I have been shocked over the way some of you talk to kids. It's like you're talking to an annoying acquaintance that keeps showing up uninvited. You know, the kind of person you can't stand but would never speak to like that because, you know, they're an adult.

Things I've personally heard (not from the same teacher, but all from the same school, and all to classes full of students) since I started subbing in 2019:

"Okay, dipshit."

"I'm going to let you do whatever the fuck you want to because I don't care enough to try to make you do otherwise."

"I don't give a fuck what you think."

"I don't give a shit."

"If you think you're going to go and talk to the principal about how mean I am, this is how the world is going to be when you get out of school. Nobody gives a fuck, nobody cares." (This was in response to a student raising their hand to ask a question I don't know, because I wasn't in the room at the time, but this is what the kid told me when they walked in the door)

"Oh, my my my. Look at you over there. You're so smart now aren't you? I bet you think you're fucking Einstein." (Student had a question on an assignment. Sarcasm was strong)

"I don't know why the hell they keep sending you fucking idiots to my room." (Student was clearly a SPED kid. They had an aid with them)

"Well hell, there fucking goes the goddamned bell and you still haven't fucking done shit. What a fucking waste of fucking space." (End of class. Not sure why it pissed her off so much, as the kids were doing their assignment)

"So fucking close your fucking mouth." (Student commented on a map that was on the screen)

There are so many more, but that's what came to mind immediately. I've heard so many use of the "fuck" and "shit" words that it's like listening to a sailor speak. The biggest part is that it's always to a roomful of kids, not directed at one kid in particular. Yes, some of them deserve it, but that's not how you talk to kids. I'm not even a real teacher and I know this.

When I'm in the room, I ask the students if what the teacher said was appropriate, or how they felt about it. A lot of them don't seem to care. I don't know if they're just used to it, or if they just think that's how teachers are supposed to talk to kids. I tell them hell no, that's not how we talk to you. I don't care if you're the biggest pain in my ass, I'm an adult and this is how it's going to be.

I've gotten several messages from kids that I've had just a few times over the last 6 or so years (some of whom are now graduated) thanking me for showing them how to talk to them like they're fucking human beings, or something like that. It breaks my heart every time, but hell, at least somebody is.

I don't know if this is a new thing, or if I've just been really fucking lucky in life, but damn. Most of you need to get your shit together.
