Why do economists continue to push for austrian economics when even the austrians reject it?

Austrian economics is another name for a loosely-grouped school of political ideology, as its proponents specifically reject any semblance of scientific methodology, empirical data collection, or testing of hypotheses. This is because Austrian economics is fundamentally an ideology, not an economics methodology in any sense of the word.

Scholars and experts have been saying this for decades, yet 2018 in it seems that Austrian economics is receiving more attention than ever, perhaps as a consequence of the rise of the far right across the world.

I think it's interesting to discuss why austrian economics continues to have such a strong stronghold in part of the population, and why they continue to reject the overwhelming evidence against it from mainstream economics. I believe that the right-wing finds solace in austrian economics for the same reasons they find solace in other pseudo-scientific ideologies like anti-climate change disinformation and creationism. The fundamental driving factor behind all of these is ignorance; a lack of education and critical thinking skills combined with a visceral hatred for mainstream science prevents the right-wing from accepting the overwhelming evidence against austrian economics and the other pseudo-sciences they tend to cling to.
