How did brahmins let their women marry low castes and become one of them?

Obviously mixed caste marriages can happen between any two caste but I don't get why Brahmins let brahmin women marry into lower castes. I don't think it was happening on this scale before modernity. If she marries a lower caste then she is part of the lower caste now because of patrilocal marriage.
