I've started my first deep dive in worldbuilding for a story that I want to tell, and I've got to say, I'm having a blast. Until now, it's just been about mapping and geography. Now that I've started building countries and populations it's becoming much easier to start building timelines of the history. It's also becoming much more complex.

While I have been mapping events on the real timeline, some other things happened that opened my up to the use of event tables. Event tables are simply two column tables that allocate one column to the contemporary event, and the other column to the events that happened in the story. They are very easy to make in a Google sheet, if you want to give it a try.

When I first came across this, I thought that it was a terrible idea. There would be no point in making a table that matched events of my story to contemporary events. But I was wrong, because it's been really helpful. My story is going to be a retelling of a contemporary event in a different setting, so having this table really helps me understand how the historical event moved and what happened and when. It basically gives me a table that spells out the entire story arc of what I'm trying to write.

I have also been able to open it up to include some other timelines from the story, which has helped with my macro story arc quite a bit. I've also even included a shared timeline that matches up to other arcs that I don't have fully written out.

So to the question: Do you use event tables during your worldbuilding process? What are your shared experiences with them? Do you find it useful?
