Why do people on this sub suggest giving things away instead of selling them?

Am I the only one who finds it really illogical that most of the time when people ask what to do with an item they no longer want in this sub, every comment is "give it away to a friend/family/thrift shop/etc."? I understand if you're just looking to get rid of it and there's just not a market for it, or if you're in a situation where your time is such that you don't want to spend any of it trying to get any money for it (I mean, if I have an old broken microwave that I can't fix and would have to carry to a dumpster, sure, I would just leave it on the curb because the dump is a ways away).

But if you have something like a fairly new iPhone or a coat or a pair of boots or even something like an old TV, and there is an obvious market for it, why would you give it away for free? I see comment after comment on this sub of things like "I gave my friend an 8k TV because I don't want to try to sell it". It makes no sense. By giving something away for free, you are removing any possibility of ever getting any compensation for it. A TV is not the same thing as a microwave oven, it's something that you spent money on, and money you spent on it is money you don't have now to replace it with something else if you need a new one. If you give it away for free, then you not only won't have that item, you also won't have any money to spend on a new item.
