What Is the Basic Logic Behind Dating?

When you are attracted to someone, you do one of three things:

1. Make contact and try to build a romantic relationship.
2. Make contact, but only engage in friendship.
3. Make no contact at all.

The way people choose one of these three behaviors can highly vary. Some people make the first choice with anyone they are attracted to, while others make the second or third choice with everyone. Dating seems to be somewhere between the first and the second choice, but the three behaviors are not the same, and you can't really reduce them to only three. There are so many different levels of romantic and platonic behavior that there are almost unlimited different choices.

But then people insist that this is dating. They say that you should be a platonic friend for a while and once you're friends, you start a romantic relationship. Does this make sense?
