Rolling a condom onto a penis which is erect but soft is a thing?

I bought condoms for my daughter to learn to put them on in case things get hot before they visit a store to buy them. But I realized that I had to pull the condom to make it fit onto the flesh of a cucumber. The condoms didn't fit without pulling them. Does this really works with real people?
