Explain to me how anyone gets a bad grade in high school

I’m almost done with my first year of college and I had the worst summer depression and anxiety which cause me to barely attend my political science class. I didn’t do a single assignment for the whole course and I got a C-. I know if I put in some effort I’ll definitely get As, so I can’t understand how people can get bad grades especially in high school.
